Diakonie is the welfare association of the Protestant Church in Germany. It is organised across multiple levels – federal association, state associations, regional works and thousands of independent providers. With hundreds of thousands of employees it ranks among the largest employers in the social sector.
Diakonie operates in nearly every social field: care, disability support, youth and family services, addiction support, education, migration, homelessness, hospitals. It runs counselling centres, schools, nurseries, sheltered workshops, residential homes, hospitals and education centres.
Employment usually follows AVR Diakonie or similar collective rules. They regulate pay, grading, allowances, special payments and social benefits. Co-determination is exercised through staff representations rather than classic works councils.
