Welfare Association

Umbrella body for free social providers, representing members and shaping social policy – six recognised nationally in Germany.

Welfare associations (Wohlfahrtsverbände) in Germany are umbrella bodies that bundle free social providers, represent members and shape social policy. Six are nationally recognised: Caritas, Diakonie, Workers' Welfare (AWO), Paritätischer, German Red Cross (DRK) and Central Welfare Office of Jews in Germany (ZWST).

The associations represent their members vis-à-vis politics, legislation and administration, organise further training, coordinate standards and support collective-bargaining issues. With around two million employees and hundreds of thousands of volunteers in total, they form one of the largest labour markets in Germany.

For candidates, the associations are not only employers but also signposts through the social landscape. Working at a member provider typically brings collective coverage, co-determination and a clear values framework. Career changes are explicitly welcomed in many areas.

Lunigi makes roles from welfare associations particularly visible – AI-safe, meaningful and collectively bargained.
