Since the pandemic, the video interview has become a standard format in many hiring processes. It saves time and travel costs, enables conversations across distances and is now common even when a later in-person meeting will follow. Beyond content preparation, a clean technical setup matters.
Key elements are a stable internet connection, a neutral background, front-facing light (such as daylight or a ring light) and a camera at eye level. An external microphone or good headphones noticeably improves audio. Platforms like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet or Whereby are standard – testing the tool 30 minutes before the call avoids surprises.
Behaviourally, the same rules apply as in-person: be punctual, engaged, speak clearly and place notes near the camera. A bit more discipline is needed because facial expressions and body language are amplified by the framing.
A special form is the asynchronous video interview, where candidates record answers to pre-set questions and submit them – efficient for employers, but it can feel impersonal for candidates.
