Aptitude Test

A test that assesses suitability for a specific role through cognitive ability, personality traits or job-specific tasks.

An aptitude test evaluates whether a person is likely to meet the demands of a specific role. Compared with a generic hiring test, it is more closely tied to concrete role requirements: train drivers are tested for reaction time, programmers for code-related tasks, and creative roles often require work samples.

Methods range from cognitive ability tests, personality diagnostics (such as the Big Five), interest inventories and situational judgement tests, to practical exercises in assessment centres. Scientifically validated aptitude tests show better predictive power than unstructured interviews and are therefore highly regarded in personnel psychology.

Preparation pays off in two steps: first, reflect on the technical content of the target role; second, train cognitive tests through practice – speed and familiarity often make the difference. Personality diagnostics, by contrast, should be answered honestly – otherwise the match with the role drops.
