Vocational Upgrading (Fortbildung)

Advanced training within the learnt profession, typically for specialisation, promotion or adaptation to new demands.

A Fortbildung builds on an existing vocational qualification and deepens, broadens or specialises professional skills. The German Vocational Training Act distinguishes three levels: adaptation Fortbildung (updating knowledge), promotion Fortbildung (higher qualification such as Meister, Fachwirt, Techniker) and retraining (changing profession).

Classic promotion-Fortbildung examples are master-craftsman qualifications in the trades, "Fachwirt" titles in commercial roles or specialist nursing qualifications. They are formally recognised, open self-employment or leadership and tend to be linked to higher pay grades in collectively bargained environments.

Funding often runs via the Aufstiegs-BAföG (formerly Meister-BAföG), covering up to 75 percent of course and exam costs. Employers, collective agreements or training funds add support. Online platforms, chamber academies and private providers offer many courses.
